The work of the cardiac surgery heart team from the University of South Alabama Medical Center was presented at a poster session at the University Health System Consortium (UHC) Annual Conference recently in Atlanta. This was the first poster from the Medical Center ever presented at the annual conference.
The poster, titled "Quality Improvement in Cardiac Surgery: An Innovative System-Based Multidisciplinary Approach," was selected as one of 60 finalists out of 270 submissions. It profiled a successful and innovative quality improvement project conducted by the USAMC.
The project was developed in response to a UHC report indicating deficiencies in the quality of cardiac surgery at the Medical Center. To address the quality gap, a team of cardiac surgery stakeholders developed a performance improvement project with the goal of improving patient outcomes and reducing resource utilization. Their methods included translating current evidence into practice protocols, and developing a collaborative systems-based care team.
The result, in the 12 months following implementation, all-cause morbidity and mortality at the Medical Center dramatically decreased.
The USAMC heart team is the only cardiac surgery team of its kind in the Mobile area.
