The University of South Alabama participated in a regional nursing conference to highlight collaboration between the USA College of Nursing and the USA Hospitals.
Dr. Valorie Dearmon, chair of Adult Health Nursing at the College of Nursing, and Valerie Heinl, a nurse educator and bariatric coordinator at the USA Medical Center, addressed the Southern Excellence in Nursing Consortium's 2013 Annual Meeting in Baton Rouge on Nov. 1.
The panel discussion "Academic & Practice Partnerships for Quality" also included teams from Louisiana and Texas. Dearmon and Heinl were selected to represent Alabama.
USA Medical Center Assistant Administrator Lisa Mestas said the collaborative efforts between the College of Nursing and the USA Hospitals has helped patients.
"Val Heinl has been very active in working with the our College of Nursing partners in national research studies regarding engaging staff on the frontlines and empowering them in their practice and patient care," Mestas said. "The College of Nursing and our Frontline Innovations Team are now initiating the first Nurse Congress at the Medical Center, which is a nurse-driven congress which focuses on improvements in practice and patient care."
