MOBILE, Ala. -- The USA Children’s & Women’s Hospital Marketing and Communications team was recognized with a Medallion and a Judges’ Choice Award for the successful promotion of the 2016 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) Reunion during the Public Relations Council of Alabama’s Annual Medallion Competition in Birmingham on April 3, 2017.

More than 600 former patients, their families, and hospital staff attended the 2016 NICU Reunion that reunites premature infants with their caregivers during an event that has been celebrated annually for more than 25 years. Members of the NICU staff volunteer their time and talents to plan the celebration.

NICU graduates are babies who were born premature, underweight or ill, and were treated in the NICU at Children’s & Women’s. A Level III NICU, it provides the region’s most advanced care for premature and critically ill newborns. At least 1,000 babies are admitted annually to the hospital’s NICU, with more than 20 percent of those infants brought from other hospitals by the hospital’s transport vehicle.NICU 2_o.jpg

The PRCA conference was host to more than 100 professional public relations practitioners and students from across the state and provided training on crisis communications and building a new brand among other topics. A total of 51 awards were given with two entries selected for the Judges’ Choice Award. Best of Show was awarded to JJPR, a public relations firm in Baldwin County.

The University of South Alabama and USA Health won a total of six awards. USA Mitchell Cancer Institute Marketing & Communications team received an Award of Merit for promotion of the 2016 groundbreaking ceremony for Mitchell Cancer Institute’s new Kilborn Clinic now under construction in Fairhope. USA’s Marketing & Communications staff won Awards of Excellence for South Magazine, a rebranding campaign, and new branding guidelines.

Members of the Marketing & Communications staff at USA Hospitals include Director Jennifer Ekman and Assistant Director Casandra Andrews. Ekman also leads marketing efforts for USA’s Mitchell Cancer Institute where Carol McPhail is assistant director of the Marketing & Communications Department.

The hospital also is the region’s leader in births, with more than 2,800 babies delivered each year. Nearly 40,000 patients visit the Pediatric Emergency Department annually at the Mobile hospital.
