MOBILE, Alabama, Jan. 12, 2017 – The University of South Alabama Medical Center is being recognized statewide for the successful way heart failure patients are treated. Research shows that those who seek care from centers where quality improvement measures are followed have better outcomes.
The Medical Center recently received the Get With The Guidelines-Heart Failure Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award for implementing specific quality improvement measures outlined by the American Heart Association/American College of Cardiology Foundation’s secondary prevention guidelines for patients with heart failure.
This marks the sixth year USA Medical Center has been recognized with a quality achievement award for heart failure care. The Get With The Guidelines quality improvement program helps hospital teams follow the most up-to-date, research-based standards with the goal of speeding recovery and reducing hospital readmissions for heart failure patients.
Many published studies demonstrate the program’s success in achieving patient outcome improvements. The staff at USA Medical Center earned the award by meeting specific quality achievement measures for the diagnosis and treatment of heart failure patients. These measures include evaluation of the patient, proper use of medications and aggressive risk-reduction therapies, such as ACE inhibitors/ARBs, beta-blockers, diuretics, anticoagulants, and other appropriate therapies. Before patients are discharged, they also receive education on managing their heart failure and overall health, get a follow-up visit scheduled, as well as other care transition interventions.
USA Medical Center also is the first hospital in the state to be recognized by the American Heart Association for the way stroke patients are cared for when they arrive at the emergency department. The USA Medical Center’s stroke team earned the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s Get With The Guidelines-Stroke Gold Plus Target: Stroke Honor Roll Elite Plus award in 2016. The Medical Center’s stroke team had to achieve specific results spanning a two-year period to receive that award.
