MOBILE, Ala. -- The Alabama Organ Center honored USA Medical Center in Mobile with its 2016 Gift of Life Award, given annually to hospitals demonstrating a commitment to successful organ and tissue programs.
Mobile’s only Level 1 Trauma Center earned the honor because of the following: education provided to patients and their families by staff members, the presence of a donation committee, donor family recognition, participation in National Donate Life Month activities, as well as donation education offered to the community.
Michael Scott, COO of the Alabama Organ Center, presented the award during a management meeting, praising USA Medical Center team members for their efforts to help others receive the gift of life through organ donation.
In the United States, more than 123,000 people are on the national organ transplant waiting list, with nearly 3,200 in Alabama, according to the National Organ Center, Alabama's non-profit organ and tissue recovery agency.
Despite the need, only 30,000 organs are transplanted nationwide every year, as 22 candidates die everyday waiting for a donor. For more information, and to register to be a donor, visit the AOC website at www.alabamaorgancenter.org.
