Looking for a way to honor the memory of their late mother, Lillian Howze, who worked for the University of South Alabama hospitals for 37 years, a local family decided to make a donation in her honor to USA Children’s & Women’s Hospital in Mobile last year.
This year, Howze’s adult children and extended family made plans to help out again, enlisting a few local businesses to bolster their giving. On Dec. 7, the family delivered 21 bicycles to staff members from the hospital’s Mapp Child and Family Life Program.
Janice Richardson, Howze’s daughter and a retired principal from Clarke County, Alabama, helped deliver the colorful bikes.
“Our mother loved this hospital and working with children,” Richardson told a group gathered to accept the generous donation. “This is our way of keeping her memory alive.”
It took two trucks to deliver the bikes, which came in all shapes and sizes including a small red and black trike to bigger bikes for school-age boys and girls.
“We’re so grateful for the generosity of Ms. Howze’s family,” said Owen Bailey, administrator for USA Children’s & Women’s Hospital. “It means so much when those touched by our hospital also remember the patients and families who spend time here throughout the year.”
