The University of South Alabama Medical Center Auxiliary won first place for special programs during the 2015 Alabama Council of Hospital Auxiliaries statewide convention held in November. The Medical Center’s Auxiliary was honored with the top award in special programs for its annual Dedication of Lights, held the first Wednesday in December.
This year’s Dedication of Lights is planned for 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 2, 2015 in the lobby of USA Medical Center. It is a free community event and open to the public.
Personalized ornaments are purchased in memory of loved ones and then placed on a special tree in the Medical Center lobby during the evening event. This program offers a way for USA employees and those in the community to honor those most dear to them during the holiday season. Members of the auxiliary and other volunteers also decorate the hospital’s main lobby with a second tree and hang green garland and red bows from the staircase.
The Medical Center’s Office of Volunteer Services has been organizing the special program since 2002. Several families with ties to the Medical Center have been honoring their loved ones through the program for years.
The Powell family come to remember their daughter, Kathy, who died in a car accident on her way home from work. She was a graduate of the USA School of Nursing and was employed by the Medical Center. Family members have thanked the staff for giving them the opportunity to recognize their daughter and her contributions to the community.
