From 9 a.m. until noon on Friday, August 28, nationally certified child passenger safety technicians at the University of South Alabama Children's & Women's Hospital will provide free inspections of children's car seats. The inspections will be performed in the parking lot in front of the hospital near the Mom Care building, 1700 Center Street. For more information, call (251) 415-1274.
Statistics show that up to 90 percent of all children's car seats are installed incorrectly. "One of the top reasons for deaths in young children is because of improperly installed car seats," said Courtney Thomson, a registered nurse and parent educator for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Children's & Women's Hospital.
Capt. Leroy Smith with the Saraland Police Department also will be at the free event to assist and talk with parents about keeping little ones safe.
USA Children's & Women's has 12 certified child passenger safety technicians on staff, Thomson said. "We send home hundreds of babies every month from our hospital, so we want to always make sure they are leaving in a seat that is properly installed. You can never be too careful when it comes to the health of your children."
