More than 90 percent of the employees at the University of South Alabama Children’s & Women’s Hospital got their flu shots this year. The Joint Commission, the nation’s largest health care accreditation agency, has recognized Children’s & Women’s with a Silver Level award for achieving a 91 percent level of vaccination compliance by employees and staff.
“USA Children’s & Women’s Hospital is at particular risk as children under the age of 5 and pregnant women have a higher risk of complication from influenza,” said Dr. Kevin Green, medical director for infection control at USA. “Vaccination against influenza is simple, safe and effective. With more than 90 percent of employees being vaccinated, all Children’s & Women’s staff should commend themselves for choosing to put the health of their patients at the forefront."
In addition to an average of 36,000 deaths each year, influenza causes countless hours of lost productivity due to illness. Well-meaning health care workers may work ill, putting patients and co-workers at risk. In response, the Joint Commission instituted a Flu Vaccination Challenge to encourage a higher level of immunization by health care employees.
“USA Children’s and Women’s Hospital achieved outstanding employee flu vaccination success due to active engagement of hospital-wide leadership, small-group education about the importance of vaccination for patient safety and offering the vaccine to the staff on their unit on all shifts,” said Amy McRae, director of quality management/education at Children’s & Women’s.
USA Children’s & Women’s Hospital is among fewer than ten freestanding hospitals in the country dedicated specifically to the health care needs of children and women, offering Mobile’s only neonatal and pediatric intensive care units, pediatric oncology and sickle cell outpatient center and high-risk obstetrical care. With more than 2,700 births annually, USA Children’s & Women’s Hospital is the area’s leader in deliveries.
A major expansion that will nearly double the size of USA Children’s & Women’s Hospital is scheduled to be completed in 2013, recognizing the community’s validation of the hospital’s quality of care and the hospital’s opportunity to continue to meet the needs of a varied and growing population.
