May 5, 2012 - Lighthouse Goes Up at Children's & Women's

A giant crane lifts the top of the Children’s & Women’s lighthouse into place.

MOBILE – The final portion of the lighthouse structure has been lifted in place at the USA Children’s & Women’s Hospital expansion project. It sits atop the expansion’s public elevators.

Weighing 71,000 pounds, the lighthouse is made of a steel inner shell and a reinforced fiberglass outer surface, and will feature windows wrapped around a lighted globe. It will serve to symbolize the beacon of hope and healing that Children’s & Women’s offers to all children and women in our region.

The 200,000 square foot hospital expansion is expected to be completed in early 2013.

A construction worker steadies the top of the lighthouse as it is lowered into place.
