Oct. 15, 2014 - USA Medical Center Ebola Press Conference Summary

The USA Medical Center held a press conference this morning to discuss the process of care for a patient who was transported to the Medical Center from the Mobile County Health Department Tuesday at 6:50 p.m.  USA Medical Center Emergency Department and Infectious Disease specialists evaluated the patient.  After a thorough examination was conducted, it was determined that the patient did not meet the Centers for Disease Control screening criteria, and there was no risk for Ebola.

Administrator Beth Anderson complimented the health care team at the Medical Center and the procedures in place. She said the Medical Center is well-versed in handling emergencies and traumas, including hurricanes and industrial accidents. Infection Control Nurse Manager Teresa Aikens and Dr. Eduardo Calderon, assistant professor of Infectious Diseases, addressed the process by which the patient was evaluated, following CDC guidelines. 

Mobile County Health Department Officer Dr. Bert Eichold discussed the visit to the Health Department and the decision to transfer the patient to the Medical Center.
