September 6, 2013 - Mark Your Calendar: 6th Annual GO RUN for Women’s Cancer
Article

The 6th Annual GO RUN (5K and 1 mile fun run/walk) for gynecologic cancer research at the University of South Alabama Mitchell Cancer Institute will be held Sept. 14, 2013, at 8 a.m. on USA’s main campus - Mitchell Center Lawn/Moulton Tower. On-site registration will begin at 6:30 a.m.

Proceeds from the event support an endowment for research in women’s cancer, including ovarian cancer, uterine cancer and cervical cancer. “This event has gained tremendous support throughout the community and continues to grow each year,” said Kori Saucier, assistant director of development at the USA Mitchell Cancer Institute.

The morning will consist of free food, live music, kids zone, giveaways, and vendors. Performance shirts will be given to all participants who register by Sept. 9, and youth shirts will also be available.

Teams are encouraged to participate. A team is comprised of six or more registered participants in any combination of runners, walkers, kids, and adults, who come together to run/walk for GYN cancer awareness and research.

There are several motivations behind establishing a team for this event. Some teams walk in honor of someone battling cancer, to support a survivor, or in memory of a loved one who lost their battle. Other teams are composed of co-workers, friends, family, or students who want to make their contribution to a great cause.

Last year, the GO RUN event attracted over 1500 runners/walkers and raised over $70,000 for gynecologic cancer research. “We anticipate this year to be even bigger and better,” Saucier explained. “Therefore, we need plenty of volunteers!” Volunteer opportunities are available Sept. 13 and Sept. 14.

Each individual must complete a race application, in addition to each team submitting a team application.
