Dr. Jyotsna Varma and Dr. Robert Watson have received their American Board of Anesthesiology Subspecialty Certification in Pediatric Anesthesiology.

The certification is a new offering from the Board. Drs. Varma and Watson were among the inaugural group to take the first-ever pediatric anesthesiology board exam offered nationwide on Oct. 19, 2013. They are also two of only nine physicians in Alabama who passed the exam and earned this subspecialty certification.

Dr. Varma is Chief of Anesthesiology at Children’s & Women’s Hospital and has been with the hospital since 1993. She is fellowship-trained in pediatric anesthesiology and board certified in the specialty of anesthesiology.

Dr. Watson has been practicing anesthesiology at both USA Children's & Women's Hospital and USA Medical Center since 2006 and is board certified in anesthesiology.

Pediatric Anesthesiology is a discipline of anesthesiology that includes the evaluation, preparation, and management of pediatric patients undergoing diagnostic and therapeutic procedures in operative and critical care settings. In addition, this discipline also entails the evaluation and treatment of children with acute and chronic painful disorders.
