To the South Alabama family:
I am thrilled at the outpouring of support that we have had from the USA Family for the GO Run in years past. I would like to remind everyone at South Alabama to consider signing up for the race as a runner, walker or runner in spirit. As you know, all of the funds raised go to help us with our Gynecologic Oncology research right here at MCI -- funds raised remain right here in Mobile, Alabama, to benefit our patients and our research goals at the USA Mitchell Cancer Institute.
We hear very little about the gynecologic cancers. Ovary, uterine, cervical, vaginal and vulvar cancers combined make up the fifth most common group of cancers and affect thousands of women on the Gulf Coast and millions worldwide. Every seven minutes a woman in the U.S. is diagnosed with a gynecologic cancer. We are working on a screening test for ovarian cancer right here at the Mitchell Cancer Institute, which we hope will provide a method of early detection for this dreaded disease. We are also working on a drug to potentially prevent ovarian cancer, and new ways to treat ovarian and uterine cancers, as well as addressing racial disparities in gynecologic malignancies.
Dr. Rod Rocconi, Dr. Jennifer Scalici and our team have built a translational research program with the funds raised from this great event over the past eight years. Funding from the GO Run has been added to the Gynecologic Oncology Research Endowment, and funds raised and generated from the endowment are being used as we speak to move the spectrum of gynecologic cancer research projects forward. Exciting discoveries are happening right here at the Mitchell Cancer Institute and are being funded in part by funds raised from the GO Run.
The race will be held on Saturday, Sept. 19, at 8 a.m. at the Moulton Bell Tower on the USA Campus. As this event has grown, we have seen tremendous support from the community including patients, families, referring physicians, students, fraternities and sororities, as well as our great folks throughout the University of South Alabama. Food, a kids zone, drinks and entertainment will make this a great event for a Saturday morning that is fun for the entire family. For those relatively new to the University of South Alabama, I would especially encourage you to join us for the GO Run. There are opportunities to volunteer, but the most helpful way to participate is to register for the race and actually walk or run! There is a 5K or a 1-mile fun run/walk providing an opportunity for those non-runners like myself.
Race packets may be picked up at the Mitchell Center on the USA Campus the day prior to the race, Friday, Sept. 18. You can also register online at www.usamci.com/gorun. I look forward to seeing everyone from South Alabama there on Saturday, Sept. 19, for the GO Run!!!
