MOBILE, Alabama (12/3/2018) – The specialty pharmacy at USA Health Mitchell Cancer Institute has been granted ACHC accreditation with a Distinction in Oncology. ACHC is a recognized leader in health care accreditation, which is awarded to organizations that meet established regulatory requirements and standards.
“This accreditation is another example of how MCI provides the best quality of care for our patients,” said Brittney Carden, pharmacy manager.
Opened in July, the MCI Pharmacy can fill all of a patient’s prescriptions, including those for oral chemotherapy medications. The office is located at MCI’s headquarters on Springhill Avenue
Carden said that patients who use the MCI Pharmacy can be assured that their medication needs will be closely coordinated as part of their overall care. Pharmacy staff can also answer questions in person or by phone, and respond quickly to any adverse side effects. Prescriptions can be picked up at MCI or delivered to a patient’s address.
“Another benefit is that we’re ensuring they’re getting the medication at the lowest cost possible,” she said. In addition, pharmacy staff can help patients secure financial help from medication assistance programs.
The number of specialty pharmacies in the U.S. stood at 729 in 2017, double the number in 2015, according to the Drug Channels Institute. Its 2018 report said that locations owned by health-care providers represented the fastest growing category of accredited specialty pharmacies.
“ACHC Specialty Pharmacy Accreditation differentiates an organization from other health-care providers by demonstrating its commitment to improving patient outcomes and safety,” said Tim Safley, ACHC program director, DMEPOS, Pharmacy & Sleep. “By achieving accreditation, the Mitchell Cancer Institute Pharmacy demonstrates that its values and operational practices are aimed at improving the patient experience through ongoing compliance with the industry’s highest standards.”
To become accredited by the ACHC, organizations must submit policies, procedures and other information, and undergo a thorough in-person review. The additional Distinction in Oncology recognizes that the pharmacy works in collaboration with physicians and patients on the patients’ care plans, cost containment and patient outcomes.
The MCI Pharmacy is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. To speak with a pharmacy staff member, call 251-410-MEDS.
