MOBILE, Alabama (10/25/18) -- Dr. J. Harrison Howard has joined the University of South Alabama College of Medicine as an associate professor in the Department of Surgery and a surgical oncologist with USA Mitchell Cancer Institute.
Dr. Howard had most recently served as an assistant professor of surgery and surgical oncologist at The Ohio State University. He will focus his practice at USA Health on the treatment of melanoma, sarcoma and GI malignancies.
“I see a real opportunity to offer cutting-edge cancer care to the people in lower Alabama, coastal Mississippi and the Florida panhandle,” he said. “Being a native of Alabama, I’m also excited to come back and serve the state I love.”
Dr. Howard said that a career in academic medicine gives him the opportunity to work with medical students and residents, conduct research, and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams on patient care.
“The advent of immunotherapy is one of the most revolutionary treatment advances we’ve seen in all of cancer care,” he said. “The side effects are so minimal. It’s exciting to see patients who are treated with state-of-the-art therapy continue to live their lives and feel good.”
MCI Director Dr. Michael A. Finan commented that, “Dr. Howard brings a focused surgical approach, joining our multidisciplinary teams caring for patients with sarcoma, melanoma and GI malignancies. His breadth of training and his outstanding surgical expertise will add depth to our already talented disease-focused teams at MCI.”
A native of Birmingham, Dr. Howard earned his medical degree at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and completed his residency at UAB Hospital. He completed a Society of Surgical Oncology approved fellowship at the John Wayne Cancer Institute in Santa Monica, California before joining the Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute at The Ohio State University. He is board certified in general surgery.
