USA Mitchell Cancer Institute will hold the Fifth Annual Hope Cup Golf Tournament and Lunch & Learn on May 11 at The Country Club of Mobile from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. All proceeds from the tournament, presented by Springhill Toyota, will be used to fight melanoma and other skin cancers.
The Hope Cup is held annually during May, which is skin cancer awareness month. Melanoma accounts for only 1 percent of all skin cancer cases, but is the most lethal, accounting for the greatest number of skin cancer deaths, said Dr. Marcus Tan, surgical oncologist at MCI.
The tournament is a four-person scramble with putting contests, proximity contests on every hole and two hole-in-ones. Registration is at 10:30 a.m., with a shotgun start at noon. Proceeds benefit the Melanoma and Skin Cancer Endowment at MCI.
For non-golfers, there is a feature Lunch and Learn beginning at 11:30 a.m. Speakers for this event are Bill Barrick, Hope Cup honoree and executive director of Bellingrath Gardens and Home, Dr. Spencer Liles, surgical oncologist at MCI, and Dr. Virginia Reeder, dermatologist at Advanced Dermatology and Skin Care Centre. These experts will speak about skin cancer research, detection and prevention. Tickets for the Lunch & Learn are $25.
