The University of South Alabama Mitchell Cancer Institute clinic being constructed in Fairhope has been named for attorney and philanthropist Vincent F. Kilborn III.

Members of the USA Board of Trustees approved a resolution Dec. 2 naming the 11,000-square-foot cancer treatment center the USA Mitchell Cancer Institute Kilborn Clinic. Earlier this year, Kilborn established the Vincent F. Kilborn III Endowment at MCI, committing $1.5 million to support the new clinic, located on Fairhope Avenue.  It is expected to open in the summer of 2017.

“The generosity of the Kilborn family is heartwarming, and we are very excited about our partnership,” said Dr. Michael A. Finan, MCI director. “This generous commitment will provide funding for an endowment, which will support our cancer services in Baldwin County for many years to come.”

Kilborn, whose father died of pancreatic cancer in 1971, said he has felt a personal calling to combat the disease. In 2006, he created a research scholar fund at USA to train top physicians and researchers at MCI. Kilborn encouraged others to join the battle against cancer.

“Cancer has affected my family like it has so many others,” he said. “The community has provided me with the opportunity to give back to those who need and deserve the best cancer treatment that medical science has to offer. The establishment of the USA Mitchell Cancer Institute Kilborn Clinic will be a great stride in that effort.”
