Freshwater and saltwater anglers competed Saturday, October 29, in a unique fishing tournament that benefits pancreatic cancer research at USA Mitchell Cancer Institute.

The Salty Worm Brackish Classic and Delta Bash were created by the Gaillard family of Mobile after pancreatic cancer claimed the lives of two Gaillard brothers in 2011. Tommy and Peter Gaillard, both well known in the Mobile business community, loved to fish.

Funded in part by the Gaillard Pancreatic Cancer Research Endowment, MCI scientists are working to better understand and develop a screening test for pancreatic cancer, which has now surpassed breast cancer as the third leading cause of cancer deaths in the U.S.

MCI is an academic cancer research and treatment facility with offices in Mobile, Fairhope and Monroeville.
