Dr. Spencer Liles, assistant professor of surgery in the USA College of Medicine, has earned board certification in Complex General Surgical Oncology. The distinction gives the University of South Alabama the only two board-certified cancer surgeons in Mobile. Dr. Liles is a member physician of USA Mitchell Cancer Institute and sees patients at MCI.
“The new certification indicates that the surgeon has completed a fellowship in surgical oncology at an institution certified by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education,” said Dr. Marcus Tan, who is the other board certified cancer surgeon in the area. “These institutions have the breadth and depth of cancer surgery and all aspects of treating cancer patients.”
Liles completed a fellowship in Complex General Surgical Oncology at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. He also completed a general surgery residence and an NIH-T32 Research Training Program in Surgical Oncology fellowship at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
Liles’ areas of clinical interest include melanoma, breast, endocrine pathology and gastrointestinal malignancies. He has authored numerous articles on these and other subjects.
