June 5, 2012 - Getting Moving After a Stroke Discussed at Next USA Stroke Support Group Meeting
Article

Of the many goals to achieve after a stroke, one of the most important is simply to get moving again. That’ll be the focus of the next South Alabama Regional Stroke Support Group meeting on Tuesday, June 19 from 6-7 p.m. in the USA Medical Center’s 10th floor dining room. The stroke group meets the third Tuesday of each month.

Dr. Dennis W. Fell, chairman of USA’s department of physical therapy, will speak on Optimal Motor Recovery and Movement after Stroke. “Physical therapy is a key player in the motor rehabilitation after any neurologic disorder to help people get moving again in meaningful ways,” Fell said. “I'll be presenting some of the latest information on recovery of movement after stroke, with an emphasis on how therapists can help encourage safe but frequent and meaningful use of the affected limbs as a means of changing the brain to improve movement!”

Fell earned his bachelor’s and medical degrees from the University of South Alabama. In addition to Fell’s talk, the meeting will feature a healthy meal and door prizes. Reservations are requested and can be made by e-mailing Angela Blakley, stroke care coordinator, at ablakley@usouthal.edu or calling 471-7671.

USA Medical Center is the Mobile area’s first “Gold Plus” Performance Achievement Award recipient for stroke care, awarded by the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association. Visit www.usahealthsystem.com and click on Medical Center for more information.
