MOBILE, Ala. -- The tree is trimmed and the halls decked with whimsy at USA Children's & Women's Hospital as the staff prepares to celebrate the joy and wonder of the season for the eighth annual Lights of Love tree-lighting ceremony planned on 5:30 p.m. on Dec. 4, 2018. A rain date, on Dec. 11, also has been set, just in case.
The free community event has expanded in recent years to include a holiday tree trail featuring 100 live trees that will decorate Geri Moulton’s Children Park. The trees will stay up through the month of December and will be lit from dusk until midnight for the enjoyment of families staying at the hospital, staff and the community.
On Dec. 4, choral groups from Murphy High School, Faith Academy, UMS-Wright Lower School and Upper School, and Fairhope High School, among others, will entertain guests before the 50-foot tall tree twinkles to life in front of the hospital.
The grounds crew at USA Children’s & Women’s Hospital, along with more than 100 volunteers, spend weeks assembling the tree frame and then preparing the branches for placement. Because the tree is 50 feet tall, a hydraulic lift was used to do most of the decorating. The tree features more than 350,000 lights.
The event is sponsored by USA Children’s & Women’s Hospital, USA Mitchell Cancer Institute, Ronald McDonald House and USA Physicians Group.
