Ataxia is a dyssynergy of motor activities commonly caused by disorders of the cerebellum, but may also result from abnormalalities in motor or sensory systems. It is characterized by tremor with intention.
This man has ataxia on his left side due to a previous left cerebellar stroke. Note the intention tremor, which is a tremor that increases as he reaches his endpoint.
Note the wobbliness as the patient tries to tandem walk. Truncal ataxia is related to abnormalities of midline cerebellum, whereas appendicular ataxia results from lateral abnormalities.
