Our Pediatric Department is a 58-bed unit encompassing two floors. The fourth floor can treat up to 35 children from birth through adolescence with acute and chronic illnesses. The fifth floor houses a three-bed Epilepsy Monitoring Unit and 20 patient rooms dedicated to providing high quality care for children with blood disorders and cancer.

We are committed to providing children with quality, family centered care. Our staff provides this level of care using a multidisciplinary approach, which includes specially trained physician and nursing staff, social workers, pharmacists, nutritionists, physical and occupational therapists, respiratory therapists and child life specialists.

Many families and patients often find that the atmosphere in Pediatrics promotes unity, love and understanding in meeting the needs of our patients. Lasting relationships are formed with patients and their families.

Our unit offers other unique opportunities for patients and their families during the hospital stay, including:

  • Unit educators who can provide helpful information to patients and families.
  • Starbright computer network, which allows patients to communicate with other hospitalized children throughout the United States and Canada.
  • The Treehouse, a play area which provides a “safe place” where no medical procedures can be performed.
  • The Class Act program, where Mobile County Public School System teachers provide in-room and classroom continuity of education for hospitalized children, allowing them to keep up with their classmates.
  • Free wireless Internet access for patients and their families.
  • A Children’s “Bill of Rights.”
