USA Welcomes Dr. Melody Petty

Dr. Melody L. Petty recently was appointed assistant professor of pediatrics at the University of South Alabama College of Medicine and serves as a pediatric hospitalist at USA Children's & Women's Hospital. Dr. Petty earned her medical degree at the University of Mississippi School of Medicine. She completed her residency in pediatrics at USA, where she was recognized as the Residency Core Curriculum Scholar. Dr. Petty is a member of the USA Program Evaluation and USA Pediatric Residency committees. She is a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Department of Pediatrics Hosts Residents Day

The University of South Alabama Department of Pediatrics hosted its 12th annual Residents Day on October 17, 2014.  At the event, 12 senior residents in the pediatrics residency program presented their scholarly work to fellow residents, faculty and students. Dr. Rosina Connelly, associate director of the pediatrics and residency program and associate professor of pediatrics at USA, said the program requires scholarly activity in one of three options: research, quality improvement or community advocacy projects. Residents choose a topic and faculty adviser. USA Children's & Women's Hospital Marks Anniversary of '1-Room Schoolhouse'

The University of South Alabama Children's & Women's Hospital is marking two anniversaries this fall: The 30th year of its Tree House play area and the 25th year of its Class Act program, which helps students keep up with their schoolwork while they're hospitalized. The Tree House, an activity center for patients of all ages who do not have any isolation requirements, was updated and enhanced in the hospital's $72.6 million expansion. It's a cosy area, where the children can relax and play games, watch videos or read. The Tree House and the Class Act program are both part of the hospital's Mapp Child and Family Life Program, meant to make all aspects of a hospital stay easier on the young patients and their families. New Courtyard, Lobby & Gift Shop Dedication

The University of South Alabama Children's and Women's Hopstial held a reception to dedicate the new courtyard, lobby & gift shop with a large gathering of friends and employees of USA Health System. The ceremony included remarks from hospital administrator Owen Bailey, USA president Tony Waldrop and two mothers whose families have been touched by our hospital. New Lobby, Courtyard Underway at USA Children's and Women's Hospital

The University of South Alabama Children's and Women's Hospital is in the process of completing a new lobby and courtyard. The art-filled courtyard will offer a relaxing place for patients and families to meet in fresh air, and the lobby will house a new gift shop and information desk. See more...

Dr. Maurtua-Neumann Featured on Local News

Dr. Paola Maurtua-Neumann, assistant professor of pediatrics and adolescent medicine at the University of South Alabama College of Medicine, recently was interviewed by several news outlets about the recent outbreak of whooping cough, a highly contagious bacterial disease that causes uncontrollable, violent coughing.

USA Children's & Women's Hospital Holds NICU Reunion

Sunday marked the 25th year that graduates of the University of South Alabama Children's & Women's Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) have been reunited to celebrate the gift of life.

All USA NICU graduates were once babies undergoing treatment at the hospital for being born prematurely, ill or underweight. The graduates, their families and friends were greeted by doctors, nurses and administrators from the hospital and enjoyed food and live entertainment.  See more...

Dr. Trimm Receives ACGME Parker J. Palmer Courage to Teach Award

Dr. R. Franklin Trimm, professor of pediatrics at the University of South Alabama, was recently selected as one of a small group of medical educators from across the United States to receive the Parker J. Palmer Courage to Teach Award. Dr. Trimm will be presented the award at the Annual Education Conference of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) in National Harbor, Md., in February 2014. This award, given by ACGME, honors residency program directors who find innovative ways to teach residents and to provide quality health care while remaining connected to the initial impulse to care for others in this environment. See more...
